Drinking & Cooking

Use only what you need.
Don’t clean vegetables and fruit under a running tap, use the kitchen sink instead.

When washing clothes by hand, use a wash tub instead of a running tap. Use a washing machine for full loads only.

Don’t leave the hose running to clean your floors, use a mop and bucket instead.

Take shorter showers (not longer than 5 minutes), limit water used during your shower by turning the tap off while you are applying soap.

Don’t let the water run when you brush your teeth or washing your hands and face.

Don’t use a hose to wash the car. A bucket of water is quite adequate.
Instead of washing dishes under a running tap, use the kitchen sink.
Do not wash vegetables and fruits under the tap open , use the kitchen wash basin.

Only water your lawn when it needs it. Frequent sprinkling is wasteful. Water during the cool parts of the day: early morning or late evening.

Take a water meter reading on 1st day (1234,5678).
The next day, take a reading at same time (3234,5678).
Subtract the readings: you will get your daily consumption (eg. 2000 liters/day).
Compare with the table below to check if your daily consumption is within in the range.

Close all outlets (taps), flush tanks and ensure there is no water passing into the tanks.
Take water meter reading. After 5 minutes, take another reading. If there is a difference, then there is a leak between the meter and the tank or direct line.
Mark the water level in the roof tanks.
Wait 5 minutes.
Check the water level in the tank. If there is a drop in the water level, this would indicate that there is a leak after the roof tank.
To check the internal water lines, close all taps and then attach a ribbon or piece of cloth to the end of a rod. Place the rod into the water tank and let the ribbon or cloth hang near to the out-let of the pipe. If the cloth is sucked into the pipe, there is a leak in the particular line.

Gardening:

The Authority is not responsible for the supply of water for gardening or irrigation purposes.
The size of the garden tap should not exceed ½” diameter.
A drip irrigation system with timers should be provided for controlling water consumption and irrigation should take place in the early morning or late evening.
Any lawn area should be small in size or avoided as it will consume a lot of water. A brick pavement with spaces planted with drought tolerant trees is preferable.
It is advisable to fix a separate tank for the garden at a level higher than the domestic tank.
Water consumption for irrigation: grass area: one m² = 10L/day / one tree = 10L/day

If the capacity of your air conditioner is more than 100 tons, it is a great idea to use the condenser drain water for flushing systems & gardening purposes.
We also advise that the water can be reused in industrial premises such as laundries, car washing services, garment factories, etc - after suitable treatment.
In major projects, grey water is to be treated and reused for garden & flushing purposes. For these purposes, there should be two separate water supplies and two drainage systems with a standby fresh water supply in case of gray water supply outage.
It is advisable to use reject water from the R.O. plants by diverting it to a separate ground tank and then used for flushing, cleaning, gardening, etc.
